About the photograph
Manhattan gathers itself out of hundreds of small lights. The Empire State Building rises above the crowded rooftops, its warm crown held against a broad blue sky and the darker weight of cloud.
A fifteen-second exposure stretches the waterfront traffic into a continuous ribbon. Above it, windows remain separate, each a small rectangle within the larger mass of the city. The composition moves between those scales: a single illuminated room, an entire skyline. Across the dark band of water, the city feels at once densely occupied and held at a distance.
