Snow makes a drawing of the trees. Across the broad white path of the Mall, two rows of lamps narrow into the distance, offering small points of warmth beneath the intricate black canopy.
The photograph holds two different kinds of order together. Rails, benches and lamps carry the eye steadily forward; overhead, the branches cross and divide in almost every direction. The open foreground gives that complexity room to breathe. Without a crowd to set its pace, the familiar park avenue becomes a space the eye can enter slowly, following one light after another.
